Thinning out the understory in a forest is done to increase sunlight penetration to the forest floor which promotes the growth of diverse native plants, reduces competition among trees for resources and ultimately creates a healthier forest ecosystem. Thinning and mulching helps prohibit tree top to tree top burning/spreading during wildfires, as well as adding biomass to your forrest floor improving the soil quality exponentially.
